Catch Weight - When an item’s weight varies

Hi,

Catch Weight - When an item’s weight varies

Catch Weighting is a food industry term that means “approximate weight.” For food products that naturally vary in size, such as blocks of cheese or cuts of meat, items are typically sold by a unit such as block or case, but priced by the pound. You often use catch weight products in industries where products can vary slightly by weight or size, or both, such as the food industry. Catch weight products use two units of measure – an inventory unit and a catch weight unit. The inventory unit is the unit of measure in which the product is weighed and invoiced. The catch weight unit is the unit in which the inventory transactions are performed, such as sold, received, transferred, picked, and shipped. The nominal quantity represents the conversion between the catch weight unit and the inventory unit. Minimum and maximum quantities represent the allowed interval in which the inventory quantity can vary.

Example

Consider fresh shrimps packed in boxes, which is also the unit in which customers order the shrimps. Because each box varies in weight, the shrimps are invoiced in kilograms. When several boxes are picked to a sales order, the boxes are weighed to determine how much to invoice the customer. In this example, we use kilograms as the inventory unit and boxes as the catch weight unit.
